Getting Your Home Repaired

The Best Ways To Deal With Roof Mold And Algae

You may begin to notice discoloration on your roof shingles. Discoloration is often a sign that mold, algae or moss has begun growing on your roof. While harmless, these streaks can make your roof look terrible and will come back even if you wash it off. You will need to do something more to eliminate the discoloration.

Install Darker Shingles

If your shingles are somewhat old, you could replace them with new shingles that are dark and will hide the mold as a result. One of the downsides of choosing a darker roof is that if you live in a warmer climate, the darker tiles will absorb sunlight and will increase the temperature of your home. In cooler climates, this is a great option.

Install Algae-Resistant Shingles

Another option is to use shingles that are laced with copper granules, which will kill algae. These shingles look the same as normal shingles to the naked eye. The copper is embedded in such a manner that the entire roof looks uniform and to where each section of the roof is protected. Make sure to specify this type of shingle when replacing your roof.

Kill the Algae and Mold

The problem with replacing your shingles is that this is not the most cost-effective solution, especially if it is not time to replace your shingles. If that is the case, you should instead try to kill the mold and algae with a chemical treatment.

To clean your roof, you will need to assemble the right tools. This includes bleach, a hose, rubber gloves, a bucket, a breathing mask, TSP and a handheld sprayer. You will also want to use a tarp to cover your plants so they do not come in contact with the bleach, which could be harmful. Mix one part bleach with three parts water. Then, add TSP and mix it together.

Spray the top of your roof and then work your way down. After your shingles have been soaked with the bleach, then use the hose to rinse the shingles down. After rinsing, use your gloved hands to check for slimy mold and spray the area down if you find any.
